A late-night habeas filing doesn’t free anyone. It does something quieter — and, for his fans, maybe more important. It asks California to explain the evidence.

Peterson is better known as Tory Lanez. The case number on the caption is B356717. The underlying Los Angeles criminal file is BA490599. None of that is the story. The story is what the petition is actually asking for.

Show your work

Habeas gets mythologized online as a magic wand. It isn’t.

What Peterson’s team filed is closer to a demand for accounting. Expanded medical records from related civil litigation — hundreds of pages beyond the thinner set used at the criminal trial — include a page simply titled “Evidence.” On that page, according to the petition, three bags of “foreign bodies” removed from Megan Pete’s feet were prepared and handed to Cedars-Sinai security.

Detectives later said the hospital had nothing. No fragments collected. After an earlier post-conviction fight, LAPD said booked evidence was still in its possession. Peterson’s lawyers argue the bags never entered the fragment chain the way the public narrative implied.

So the ask is blunt: make the State explain collection, transfer, booking, testing, whereabouts. Reconcile the hospital paper with the police paper. Let experts dig into the electronic medical record’s audit trail — who wrote what, who overwrote what, when.

That’s not a conspiracy podcast. That’s chain of custody and documentation.

The text that won’t go away

Buried in the exhibits is an October 2024 exchange that lands hard even if you strip out every celebrity name around it.

Prosecuting deputy district attorney Kathy Ta tells Megan Pete’s Quinn Emanuel counsel, Mari Henderson, that bullet fragments were “never found” after the hospital removed them. “Unclear if hospital misplaced,” Ta wrote. The gun and magazine, she added, were still with LAPD.

Read that twice.

The prosecution’s own words, contemporaneous, to the victim’s lawyers: the fragments weren’t located. The uncertainty pointed at the hospital — not a blogger theory, not a stan account.

That admission doesn’t free Peterson. It doesn’t prove anyone destroyed evidence. It does something fans have been screaming for in plainer language: it puts a crack in the idea that the physical story was tidy.

“Never found… Unclear if hospital misplaced.”

The medical contradiction, without the jargon pile-up

At trial, the injury story was the weather system around everything else. In the expanded civil production, experts flagged a collision inside the chart itself: an orthopedic consult that reportedly finds no radiopaque foreign bodies concerning for bullet fragments in either hind foot — while radiology documents multiple radiopaque foreign bodies.

An informatics expert points to dozens of electronic-record irregularities and says the only honest way to sort authenticity is the native audit trail: access logs, version history, who touched the chart.

The petition does not claim every overwrite is a smoking gun. The point is simpler and more dangerous to a closed case: if the medical narrative the jury absorbed can’t survive an audit, the court should know that before the file goes cold.

What hope actually looks like here

Hope, for Peterson’s supporters, should not mean pretending the next hearing is a release party.

The near-term win — the one worth watching — is an order to show cause. That’s the court saying: these facts are particular enough that the State has to answer. Account for the bags. Open the metadata. Stop treating the custody gap as a rumor.

If Division 3 of the Second District issues that order, the case stops being a closed loop of online argument and becomes a record the government has to fill in. If the bag accounting or the medical trail breaks badly for the State, further relief — even a new-trial posture in the strongest scenarios — stops being fantasy and starts being procedure.

If the court denies without that order, the lane narrows. That’s the honest map.

The only signal that matters next

Watch Division 3.

Not the quote-tweet. Not the panel. The order.

If the court opens the door — if it makes the State show its work on the bags and the audit trail — then Tory Lanez’s post-conviction fight has moved from dream to reality

And for a fanbase that has been told for years to shut up and accept the closed book, it may just be time to reopen a few
