Hip Hop Sold Out, But Kendrick Didn't

For a year, Kendrick's solo overseas stadium stops in Australia and Latin America, the ones without SZA, got announced as sold out, over and over. Then Touring Data posted the Boxscore numbers. Sydney 88%. Melbourne 93%. Mexico City 94%. Buenos Aires 75%. We brought the receipts.

Some tours sell out stadiums. Some tours sell out captions.

To be clear about which tour we mean: the North American co-headline run with SZA mostly did hit 100%. We'll get to that. This is about the solo overseas leg of the Grand National Tour, Kendrick Lamar with no SZA on the bill, in Australia and Latin America. For about a year, the timeline swore that leg was sold out. Mexico City, Sydney, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, every one of them packed. Then on Thursday, Sep 24, @touringdata posted the actual Boxscore numbers.

None of those four stadiums hit 100%. Not one.

So let's go through the posts that ran the victory lap, starting with the one furthest from the number.

Buenos Aires: "sells out," says the internet. 75%, says the Boxscore.

Oct 5, 2025. @HipHopVibe1 posts:

"Kendrick Lamar sells out Grand National Tour concert in Argentina -" (link)

A couple of minutes later, the article's author, @YuriyATL, adds a victory lap of his own:

"Kendrick Lamar sold out his #GrandNationalTour show in Argentina this weekend, and it looked crazyyyy.🔥His overseas shows have been legendary, this year. New article by me up on Hip-HopVibe:" (link)

"Looked crazyyyy" is doing a lot of work there.

Here's the number. Estadio River Plate, Oct 4, 2025: 34,367 tickets, 75.07%. That's Touring Data, and Pollstar's year-end write-u prints the exact same ticket count. Two industry outlets, one number. By our math, that leaves about a quarter of the sellable inventory (roughly 11,400 tickets) unsold. Not sold out per the Boxscore. Not even close.

To be fair, @HipHopVibe1's post got one like, so the hype machine didn't exactly have its engine running that night. But it's the biggest gap between claim and Boxscore on the board. It got worse from there: when someone asked Grok, X's AI chatbot, about River in a reply thread, the bot answered that the show "sold out, drawing about 85,000 fans. Epic crowd!" (link). Epic, sure. Also fictional.

Here's the best part: Argentina already knew. Local culture mag M.E.C.H.A ran its post-show piece under the headline "NO AGOTÓ" ("didn't sell out"). Argentine fans were saying it too. @mustbeparanoid, on show night:

"Kendrick no habrá hecho Sold Out en Argentina pero recuerden... CALIDAD ANTES QUE CANTIDAD. …" (link)

That's "he might not have sold out Argentina, but remember... quality over quantity." When the local fans are already doing damage control, the English-language timeline has no business calling a sellout.

Mexico City: the 65K that couldn't fit

Mexico is where the math really stops working.

Sep 24, 2025, the night of the Sep 23 show, @LoveIsback24:

"Another false narrative is fucking dead, a solo sold out stadium in Mexico 🇲🇽 Kendrick Lamar duckworth is him 🐐" (link)

That one had about 219K impressions as of Sep 27. The same account came back for the anniversary on Sep 23, 2026, one day before the Boxscore dropped:

"One year Ago today Kendrick Lamar performed to over 65,000 fans at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico 🇲🇽 #grandnationaltour ❤️" (link)

Talk about timing. Later that day, @HipHopReplayHQ quoted it and combined both claims in one sentence:

"1 year ago today, Kendrick Lamar sold out Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City—performing to over 65,000 fans 🏟️🇲🇽 This show kicked off the solo portion of Kendrick's GNX Tour" (link)

And @blackiiingout, the morning after the show:

"N****z from Moms basement: no one knows Kendrick outside of the US. Meanwhile 65K people in Mexico:" (link)

Touring Data's number: 58,426 tickets at 93.64%. Honestly, that's a strong night, and we'll say so. But it isn't sold out. And 65,000 is more than the show's sellable capacity, which by our math (58,426 ÷ 93.64%) comes to roughly 62,400. The internet didn't just round up. It added a section the building didn't have.

Sydney: two sellouts, one math problem

Dec 11, 2025, @PopCrave, 4,400-plus likes:

"Kendrick Lamar lights up the Allianz Stadium as he concludes the 'Grand National Tour' with 2 sold-out shows in Sydney, Australia." (link)

Touring Data: 68,989 tickets across two shows, 88.09%. If the two-night total is under 100%, then both nights can't have sold out. That's the whole argument. By our math, about 9,300 sellable tickets went unsold across the Sydney run.

@HipHopAllDay called it sold out on both nights, in two separate posts. Night one:

"Kendrick Lamar performed to a sold-out crowd of 50k+ on the first of two Grand National tour shows in Sydney, Australia 🔥🏟️" (link)

And night two:

"Kendrick Lamar & ScHoolboy Q performed Collard Greens to a sold-out crowd in Sydney at the final show of the Grand National Tour 🔥🏟️" (link)

Either post on its own is a one-night call. Put them together and it's one account calling both nights sold out, against an 88% two-night total. And "50k+" on a single night? Run the numbers: the two nights average about 34,500 tickets each, and sellable capacity averaged roughly 39,000 per show. So "50k+" isn't a crowd estimate. It's fan fiction.

@MrGNX407 went with "Sold Out Allianz Stadium" for both Sydney nights (night one, night two). Same problem, same 88%.

Melbourne: good, not perfect

Melbourne was the stronger of the two Australian stops, so it gets the gentlest treatment. @Adochrisherve still went big:

"Kendrick Lamar just shut Melbourne DOWN: 2 sold-out nights, 60K+ screaming “Not Like Us” in unison 🔥🇦🇺 …" (link)

Touring Data: 56,621 tickets over two nights, 92.76%. That's short of 60K, and it's short of two sellouts. Same rule as Sydney: a two-night total under 100% means the two nights can't both have sold out. Credit where it's due, though. Posts that only said night one sold out, like Pop Base's Melbourne clip, can't be ruled out by a two-night total, so we're leaving those alone. We only need the receipts that actually hold up.

The twist: it was the co-headline selling out

Now for the post that basically writes this article for us. @chillwithmonie, Jul 9, 2026:

"After successful legs in North America and Europe with the beautiful Sza, Kendrick Lamar successfully completed his tour, in MULTIPLE sold out stadiums across Australia and South America, WITHOUT her. Cut the mental gymnastics!" (link)

"WITHOUT her" is exactly the problem.

Pull up Touring Data's page for the North American run, when it was Kendrick and SZA co-headlining, and it's a wall of 100%: MetLife, SoFi, Allegiant, the Toronto Rogers Centre double, and more. Houston, at 93.26%, is the rare soft date. The co-headline was a real commercial event.

Then SZA drops off the bill, and the four stops in this piece land at 94 (Mexico City), 75 (Buenos Aires), 93 (Melbourne) and 88 (Sydney).

Nobody on this desk is calling that a flop. High-80s to low-90s fills with multi-million-dollar grosses are real stadium nights. Sydney grossed $9.23 million across two shows, Melbourne $8.59 million, Mexico City $5.88 million. But the idea that solo Kendrick was selling out these stadiums "WITHOUT her" doesn't hold up. The sellout run was the North American co-headline run.

Receipts box

| Stop | Timeline said | Boxscore (Touring Data)

Buenos Aires (Oct 4, 2025) | "sells out" | 34,367 / 75.07% (ticket count also per Pollstar)

Mexico City (Sep 23, 2025) | "sold out," "over 65,000" | 58,426 / 93.64%

Sydney (2 shows, Dec 2025) | "2 sold-out shows," "50k+" on night one | 68,989 / 88.09%

Melbourne (2 shows, Dec 2025) | "2 sold-out nights, 60K+" | 56,621 / 92.76%

Capacity % = tickets sold ÷ sellable inventory for that show configuration (standard Boxscore practice). Unsold and capacity figures in this piece are our own calculations from Touring Data's ticket and percentage numbers, not published figures.

Last word

The hype accounts ran it for a year and the stan accounts reposted it. Then the Boxscore came out and the replies under Touring Data sorted it out on their own. Our favorite came from @SheIs_Drek:

"@touringdata @kendricklamar They said it was sold out by himself 🤣🤣" (link)

They did say that. Touring Data says 75% at River.
