The Anomaly of Playboi Carti’s ‘I AM MUSIC’: The Culture’s Longest Album Watch Party?

In an era where surprise album drops have lost their luster and streaming has all but killed the anticipation of physical releases, Playboi Carti’s upcoming album I AM MUSIC has managed to create a cultural event that feels like something out of the golden days of midnight releases. But what’s most shocking? The sheer endurance of his fanbase and major cultural figures who were glued to their screens for seven-plus hours, watching and waiting for something that, at multiple points, seemed like it might not even come.

From DJ Akademiks to Kai Cenat and iamdontai, some of the biggest streamers in hip-hop culture found themselves in the middle of what felt like an endless cycle of delays, reassurances, and confusion, all coming straight from Carti himself. The community rallied together, turning what was supposed to be a traditional album drop into a multi-hour odyssey of frustration, excitement, and blind faith—something unheard of in an era where most artists are terrified of losing the moment.

The Timeline of a Sleepless Fanbase

Originally slated for midnight, fans worldwide cleared their schedules, expecting to experience Carti’s latest offering the moment the clock struck 12. As expected, the excitement was at an all-time high, but just as people settled in, messages went out to Akademiks and Kai personally from Carti himself—3 AM was now the new target.

For streamers like Kai Cenat, the delay only added to the entertainment factor for me, Carti fans were too invested to back out now, and waiting became part of the spectacle. But for me, being that Carti’s name is not Drake and I don’t have thousands of people waiting to see my reaction, this was my cue to go to sleep.

But the moment I woke up at 6:30 AM, I wasn’t met with the euphoria of a hyped-up first listen party. Instead, the faces of a defeated fanbase greeted me, their exhaustion written all over the live streams I had left behind. No album. No update. No nothing.

Just frustration.

Still, I had woken up at the right time—just in time to sit in on a call with Kai Cenat and Carti, where reassurance was given once again that I AM MUSIC was still on the way—now slated for 7 AM.

At this point, skepticism took over. Was this an intentional troll? A chaotic rollout? A genuine mishap? Fans had begun to doubt the album was ever going to drop. Had they been deceived? Surely not—right?

Then came 7 AM.

Still no album.

The sleep-deprived faces of fans only grew more restless, their commitment to the wait somehow intensifying despite the disappointment. At this point, if the album wasn’t going to drop, it didn’t even matter anymore—Carti had won the battle for attention either way.

Then, at 7:23 AM, the first word finally came through:

"It’s here."

Better late than never.

A Cultural Phenomenon in the Streaming Era

It’s one thing to have an artist with a cult-like following—but it’s another to have millions of people willingly stay up for nearly eight hours, waiting on an album that was, at multiple points, not guaranteed to drop.

Think about that for a second—midnight album releases have long lost their magic, and even Drake—arguably the biggest name in rap—doesn’t have this kind of hold on people.

The only thing I can compare this to is waiting outside a GameStop at midnight for the latest Fallout game—only to be told, "Sorry guys, we need three more hours." Then three hours pass and they say, "Actually, four more." By this point, most sane people would have left.

Carti fans? They doubled down.

And what amazes me most is that this was all happening in the middle of Drake and Kendrick’s ongoing dominance over hip-hop. In a time when these two titans are battling for the throne, somehow, Carti has managed to steal the moment for himself.

This is my first Playboi Carti album experience, and as I sit here writing this, going through my first listen, I can say;

This was worth the wait.

But more than that, Carti proved something bigger tonight—that in an era of predictability, streaming farms, and artificial hype, real anticipation still exists. And in 2025, Playboi Carti might just be one of the most mysterious and powerful figure in music.
